After his discharge from the US Army in 1970, he moved his young family to Espanola, NM where he lived until his passing. He was most proud to have coached his sons baseball and various sports, he cherished his trips to Denver where his daughter and son-in-law, spoiled him. He enjoyed times he and his wife played co-ed volleyball and both played softball on their respective teams. Eugenio was an Exxon service station owner for a few years until he left in April 1986 to begin a long career with the Teamsters Local Union #492 in Los Alamos, NM. His employment involved driving buses, government taxi and trucks. Gene also served as the union steward. He left KSL to work another 5 years with Portage Recycling facility also in Los Alamos until he retired in 2011. Eugenio will be remembered for his honesty and truthfulness. You always knew where you stood with him. This gained him true friends and much respect from all he knew and worked with. As with many Vietnam War Veterans, Eugenio struggled with memories of the war and in his later years, kept his feelings to share mainly with family and a very few close friends. Gene answered a call to participate in an ACTS retreat with the Pojoaque group and was most grateful for the open door that helped him work through some of his PTSD.
