Zebedeo - Age 93 - Española - Martinez

ZEBEDEO A. MARTINEZ, 93, a resident of Española, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 4, 2013. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Marcus Martinez; parents, Presciliano and Ignacita Martinez; brothers, Andres, Elias, Vicente, Guillermo and Facundo Martinez; sisters, Genoveva, Aurelia, Angelica, Sister Angela, Minnie and Julianita; close uncle, Jacobo Salazar and in-laws, Timoteo and Bernardita Trujillo. Mr. Martinez was born March 10, 1920; he was born and raised in Arroyo del Agua commonly known as the community of Coyote. In 1942 he was deployed in the United States army where he fought in the World War II Conflict where he proudly defended the United States of America for 44 months. While in Germany, he earned the Purple Heart Metal for his bravery. After returning from the war in 1946, he met and married Maria Frutosa Trujillo Martinez of Cordova. They were later blessed with 7 children. Zebedeo relocated to Española in 1970 and was employed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a federal security officer. He worked there until his retirement. He had a deep passion for most sports, but the sport of basketball prevailed above all, primarily because his children and grandchildren actively participated in the sport. Later on, those same children became coaches. His ultimate dream and desire was to watch and witness his sons win a State Basketball title. Then in March 2011, his dream was fulfilled. Led by his sons, Richard and Eric, the Española Valley Sundevils brought their first blue trophy, thus bringing pride and joy to our fans and people of this community. Mr. Zebedeo is survived by his wife of 66 years, Frutosa; children, Marsha Maestas and husband Roy, Beatrice Salazar and husband Wayne, Robert and wife Erma, Eric Martinez, Richard and wife Annette, Arnold and wife Yvette; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Eloy T. Martinez and wife Rosina; brother-in-law, Emilio Roybal and numerous other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Española. Burial to follow at 11:15 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Eric, Richard, Arnold, Jozzeb and Richi Martinez, Rubel Leyba and Jake Salazar. Honorary pallbearers named are, all his grandchildren, Wayne Salazar, Roy Maestas, Nars Martinez, Cornelio Salazar and Eloy Martinez, Jr. The family of Zebedeo A. Martinez has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
