Viola V. Duhamel, 89, a long-time resident of San Pedro, made her journey to her heavenly home on Friday, August 3, 2018. She was born on June 23, 1929 in El Guache, New Mexico to Jose Daniel and Maria Vigil. Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Leopoldo Velarde; her second husband, Harry Duhamel; father and mother-in-law, Maclovio and Francesquita Velarde; her brothers Ruben and Jody Vigil; sister Florence Maestas; and in-laws Lucy and Charlie Luna, Alfred Fernandez, Felix Bustos, and Sparky Maestas.
Viola loved to cook and entertain her family. She loved to play poker with her sisters and friends and loved to go to the casino. She loved watching Price Is Right, Wheel of Fortune, and any basketball game, but especially loved Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. She was a strong-willed, independent, feisty woman that worked hard to raise her daughter and helped raise her granddaughters.
Viola was a loving mother to her only child, Elizabeth and special son-in-law, Tomas (whom she called Tomato); and a wonderful grandmother to their three daughters – Mia, Lea, and Marialisa. Her great-grandchildren – Cory, Cody, and Leilani – always put a smile on her face and inspired her will to live. Her granddaughters and great-grandchildren were her world. She never failed to tell them how much she loved them. She is also survived by her sisters – Annabelle Fernandez and Angie Bustos; sister-in-law Rosina Maestas; brother-in-law, Richard Maestas; nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends. The family would like to thank Bessie Romero, Elva Montoya and Janette Beasley for all their help caring for Viola in her final months. A rosary will be recited on Tuesday, August 7 at 7:00p.m. at Holy Cross Church. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, August 8 at 12:00p.m., also at Holy Cross Church, with burial to follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:15p.m. Serving the family as pallbearers will be her nephews – Anthony Vigil, Rudy and Alfred (Jr.) Fernandez, Danny and Andy Maestas, and Eric Bustos.
The family of Viola V. Duhamel has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
