Tony A. Velasquez, 92, a resident of El Penavetal “Mesa de Poleo, passed away of a short illness on Thursday, September 4, 2014. Tony was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Carlota Velasquez; parents, Venceslao and Rosa Velasquez; son, Johnny Velasquez, daughters, Angelica and Josephina Velasquez; grandsons, Wayne Velasquez, and James and Alfred Jaramillo; sisters, Eva Gallegos and Madalena Olivas, brothers, Jose, Levi and Mike Ortega. Tony was a devoted father, husband, grandfather and friend. He enjoyed ranching and tending to his cattle, while riding horseback. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Tony is survived by his daughter, Rosa Jaramillo and husband Freddie, Lucy Lovato and husband Andres, sons, Rudy Velasquez and wife Antonia, Leo Velasquez and wife Anita, and Merejildo Velasquez; granddaughter raised like a daughter Sandra Gonzales, sister, Rosita Ortega, brother, Ben Velasquez and wife Felicita; 23 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren, 2 close nieces Maryann and Arcelia. Public visitation will begin on Monday, September 8, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at San Juan Bautista Catholic Church in Coyote, with a burial to follow at the Coyote Cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers Rudy Ben Velasquez, Richardo Velasquez, Gilberto Lovato, Robert Velasquez, Simon Gonzales, and Brian Velasquez, honorary pallbearers Doyle Post Benavidez Garcia, Joseph Salazar, and Merardo Garcia.
