Tony Chacon

Tony Chacon, age 73, a resident of El Rito, passed away suddenly at his home on July 18, 2023.

Tony is preceded in death by his parents, Jose P. and Anna Maria Chacon; sisters, Agapita “Connie” Lucero, Joanne Chacon, Prescilla Gaviria and Beatrice Gonzales; half-sister, Dumitilia Peterson; brothers, Tomas Chacon and Dale “Ben” Chacon; half-brothers, Jacobo and Alfonso Gallegos.

Tony is survived by his sisters, Ermelinda (Allen) Crim of Abiquiu, NM; Tila Chacon (David Suazo) of El Rito, NM; and a niece raised like a sister, Lorraine Prescilla Chacon of Phoenix, AZ; brothers, Prudy (Carmen) Chacon and Eusebio Chacon (Susanna Garcia) of El Rito, NM; Joe “Ted” Chacon of Marysville, CA; Fedelino (Tonita) Chacon of Alcalde, NM; and Chris Chacon (Maxine) of Taos, NM; and many nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Tony attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, where he received his associates in Engineering. He worked for many years at Duke City Lumber, Cooks and Lowes.

His greatest joy in life was helping others and making them smile, he enjoyed paying peoples tabs at local restaurants. Tony was an accomplished leather works designer and also made different wooden games and crosses in bottles and handed them out to his family and friends.

He loved to go fishing, hunting and just riding around in the forest roads. He loved picking different herbs in the forest and trash. He enjoyed donating his time to his parish and helped do maintenance work when he was able to do so.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A public visitation will be on Monday July 24, 2023, at 5:00 pm in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home and a Rosary to follow at 6:00 pm.  A second Rosary will be at 9:30 am on Tuesday July 25, 2023 at San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church in El Rito, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at the El Rito Community Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers: Bobbie, Heaven, Angel, Phillip Sr., Hunter, Ty, Jefferey and Ben Chacon, Tony Stevens and Mark Crim and his nephews and nieces and God children.
