SUSIE ROMERO GURULE, 74, a lifelong resident of Truchas, was called home by our Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 11, 2014, surrounded by her loving husband and family and a close family friend. Her unwavering faith and hope of Heaven, saw her through her long struggles with vascular dementia and pancreatic cancer as she continued her journey along the path of life with God. \r\nSusie was preceded in death by her loving parents, Cosme and Carmelita T. Romero; eldest brother, Samuel T. Romero; parents-in-law, Bernabe and Manuelita Gurule and a very close cousin who grew up with the Romero family, Ricky Manges. Mrs. Gurule is survived by her loving husband of 15 years, Loretto Gurule; siblings, Henry Romero of Truchas, Cecilia Romero of Santa Fe, Bernice Mascareñas of Rio Rancho, Nora M. Romero of Truchas and Mary Helen (Chic) Kelty of Santa Fe; sisters-in-law, Angie Q. Romero of Albuquerque and Viola M. Romero of Chimayo; loving aunts, Maria E. Manges of Gallup and Hipolita (Delfido) Fernandez of Chimayo; step-children, Bobby Gurule, Merlaine (Jesus) Anchondo, Maria (Salvador) Rivera, Yolanda Gurule, Loretta Rivas and Laura Gurule of Kremmer, Wyoming; in-laws, Olivama (Ben) Lopez, Anita (Jerry) Valdez, Josephita (Pasqual) DiDonato, Rose Martinez, Orphelita Gurule, Maximo (Anita) Gurule, Ben (Gladys) Gurule, David (Ramoncita) Gurule, Bernabe (Cecilia) Gurule, Andres (Cecilia) Gurule, and Antonio Gurule; God-children, Hank Romero, Jerry Manges, Jonathan Manges, and Karina Rivera; God-mother, Minnie (Gilbert) Rael and numerous nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, step-relatives, cousins and close friends too numerous to list. As a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, Susie was a member of the Holy Rosary Church in Truchas, a mission of Holy Family Parish in Chimayo. During her lifetime she served in different ministries, belonged to numerous religious organizations and prayer groups – Sodality of Mary, Holy Family Coro de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Catechist, Altar Server, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, church cleaner, General Celedora for the two coros of the Holy Family Association in Truchas, Holy Rosary Scripture Sharing group, Taize Prayer group¸ Cenacle prayer group. Susie attended Caminos de Fe, Cursillo, and Christian Living weekends. She was assistant to Nuestra Señora del Mt. Carmel Society (Las Carmelitas de Truchas), and Mayordomo for several years of Holy Rosary Church. She also served as a volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul, hospice aide, prison ministries, and aide at the Española Soup Kitchen. Her most extended and dedicated service was as assistant caretaker (along with her mother and members of the Carmelitas) for over fifty years of the historic mission “Nuestra Señora Del Rosario Mission Church built in the 1760s”.\r\nSusie was an educator by profession. She earned her BA degree from St. Joseph’s College in Albuquerque; MA from New Mexico Highlands University; bilingual endorsements from Universities in Madrid, Spain, and Guanajuato, Mexico, and participated in conferences in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Pilgrimages and travels through five continents in more than 20 countries provided Susie with additional educational growth and experiences. Her educational career, teaching in the Grants and Espanola Municipal schools, provided her the luxury of impacting and touching the lives of many children.\r\nPublic visitation will begin on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 16, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Church in Truchas. Burial will follow at the Los Llanitos Cemetery. Carrying Susie to her final resting place will be her beloved nephews serving as pallbearers, Herbert Romero, Hank Romero, Martin Mascareñas, Gary Romero, Samuel Paul Romero, and Gilbert D. Mascareñas. Honorary pallbearers named are her step-children, God-children, nieces, nephews, and her best friends, Amelia Maestas, Lenore Trujillo, Sandra Martinez, and Benita Martinez.
