SEFERINA ORTIZ, born November 20, 1919 to Nemecio and Maclovia Lucero in Chamisal, NM, has gone to join her loved ones in Heaven. She leaves behind a legacy of flowers, land, children, extended family and friends. Her beloved first husband, Telesfor Lopez; father of her 13 children preceded her in death, as did her son, Bealquin Lopez; second husband, Fred Ortiz and brother, Bernabe Lucero.
Seferina lived a long and happy life. Although her struggles were many, there was not a challenge she didn’t face head on and usually persevered. She left her home in Chamisal and joined her husband, Telesfor in Rodarte. There she built her house and home. Literally, she added rooms to the house as she added babies to the family. If you ever visited Seferina, you would find her mud plastering her house, baking bread, sewing clothes for her children, making quilts, tending to her flower and vegetable garden, bottle feeding newborn lambs, and tending to one of the many babies and children and finally adult children around her. She did not suffer fools lightly and gained respect of all who knew her. She had a subtle sense of humor as many who knew her can testify. She had many friends, young and old. Her children’s and grandchildren’s many friends were always welcomed in her home.
Mrs. Ortiz is survived her children, Theresa Sandlin (Edgar, deceased), Tomas Lopez (Viola), Priscilla Chacon (Mardoqueo), Virginia Sisneros (Abram Lovato), George Lopez (Laura), Louella Rodriguez (Mel Valdez), Lucia Lopez, Dwight Lopez (Sandy), Doris Caimi, Nick Lopez (Katherine O’Brien), Jane Lopez (Jim Connant) and Benjamin Lopez (Gloria); 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends. She passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2015.
