Ruby P. Maley

RUBY P. MALEY, 90, died Friday, January 30, 2015 in the Española Nursing Home after a brief illness.\r\nShe was born September 21, 1924 to Peter and Hansine (Fulmersen) Palmlund at their home in rural Manchester, South Dakota. Her folks immigrated to the United States from Denmark through Ellis Island. She was raised on the family farm with her siblings Levi, Edna, and Alva.Ruby graduated from De Smet High School, after which she graduated with her RN degree from St Mary's School of Nursing in Pierre South Dakota in 1945. She worked as a Navy cadet nurse in Minneapolis, Seattle, and San Francisco.Ruby and Leonard (Bill) Maley met in the Yankee Doodle Bar in San Francisco in September 1951 and eloped to Reno, Nevada where they got married December 6, 1951. She was Navy mom and wife, and raised her three children from California to New York to Virginia often by herself as Bill was frequently out at sea.In 1990, Bill and Ruby moved to Santa Fe to be near family, and when Bill died in 2004 Ruby moved to Hernandez to live next door to her daughter. In 2011 she moved into the Española Nursing home where she received very good care from everyone.\r\nShe was preceded in death by her parents and siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Maley (Stephen Smith) of Hernandez, Peter Maley (Peggy) of Hamtramck, Michigan, and Paul Maley (Mary) of Milpitas, California, and her grandchildren, Leif, Jens Peter, Erin, Denise, Jasmine, Jimmy and Cherise, and 8 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mona Schlagel of Raymond, SD and special niece, Sally Wosika of Bena, Minnesota, as well as dear friends, June Pataky and Millie Pozar.Ruby liked babies, camping, long car trips, cookies, ice cream, hanging clothes outside, gardening, and traveling. She was proud of her Danish and South Dakota heritage. She was also happy to have been able to provide scholarships to over forty nursing students in the past nine years in the Española Valley.
