Robert James Thompson passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2011 in his home surrounded by his beloved family. Robert was born on November 8, 1933 in Meadow, South Dakota. He spent much of his youth in Missouri and Nebraska (Banner County) where he was a rancher and farmer. He came to work in New Mexico where he married his wife, Eliza in 1969, making Santa Cruz his home. Robert was self-employed as a logger and owner and operator. Together Robert and Eliza traveled throughout the United States making lasting memories. Robert served active duty with the United States Army from May 22, 1957 to May 15, 1959 stationed at Fort Sheridan, Illinois and served overseas. He continued serving his country in the Army reserves an additional 4 years until 1963. Robert was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Edith Thompson and his brother William (Bill) Thompson. Robert is survived by his loving wife, Eliza Thompson and children: Gina Martinez and husband Nelson of Albuquerque, Teresa Gallegos and husband Lawrence Herrera of Dixon, Dennis Gallegos and wife Tammy of Santa Cruz, Larry Gallegos and wife Roseann of Santa Cruz and Bernadette Gallegos of Santa Cruz. Robert is also survived by 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Robert is also survived his brother, Marvin Thompson and wife Barbara of Rio Rancho, NM and Nebraska; sister, Martha Bond and husband Charlie of Nebraska; and sister-in-law, Pat Thompson of San Clement, California. A wake service will be held on Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory in Española, NM. Graveside service will be held on February 16th, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as Pallbearers: Richard Russom, Greg Hughes, Joaquin Martinez, Terrance Gallegos, Antonio Herrera, and Nadine Gallegos.
