Robert J. Montoya, 82, born January 28, 1935 departed this world on Monday, July 17, 2017. He spent his last day doing what he loved best, working on his ranch in Las Nutrias, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Robert J. Montoya, Jr. and Paul Anthony Montoya; his mother, Pauline Montoya; his father, Jose A. Montoya and stepmother, Dora Montoya; and his brothers, Frank, Harley and Eddy Collins. Robert graduated from Saint Michaels High School in 1953. He then enlisted in the United States Army, and after being honorably discharged, he continued his career with the New Mexico Highway Department, where he worked for 30 years. After retirement, he and Lucia moved to Las Nutrias, where, for the past 17 years, they ran the LAM ranch. Robert touched many lives during his time with us and will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Lucia along with his daughter, Laura Montoya and husband (Alan Martinez); grandchildren, Jillian, Jordan, and Jacob Martinez; sisters, Edwina Trujillo, Dolores and Eleanor Montoya, and many nieces and nephews. A rosary will be recited on Monday, July 24, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the San Jose Catholic Church in Los Ojos with a memorial mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Serving the family has pallbearers will be Jillian, Jordan and Jacob Martinez. The family of Robert J. Montoya has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley.
