In Loving Memory of Deacon Raymond E. Alcouffe

1940 – 2025

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Deacon Raymond E. Alcouffe, a beloved longtime resident of Los Alamos, New Mexico, on April 10, 2025, at the age of 84. A man of deep faith, unwavering love, and devoted service, Ray has now joined his cherished wife of over 50 years, Joan Alcouffe (Davenport), who preceded him in death in 2015.

Ray was born in Calistoga, California, in 1940. He earned his Doctorate from the University of Washington in 1968, the same year he began his distinguished career at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he worked until his retirement in 2002. In June 1987, Ray was ordained as a Deacon in the Catholic Church, a role he fulfilled with profound commitment and humility.

Ray met Joan in Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1963, where she was teaching elementary school. They married soon after and built a vibrant life rooted in faith, family, and service, raising five children: Michael, John, Matthew, Douglas, and Cari. Together, they were active in the Marriage Encounter and Engaged Encounter programs, dedicating themselves to strengthening marriages and preparing couples for lifelong partnerships. Many of the couples they mentored remained lifelong friends.

Beyond his professional and religious vocations, Ray lived a full and compassionate life. He enjoyed backpacking, traveling, and attending the opera. He and Joan also served as foster parents, hosted international students, and were actively involved with the Head Injury Foundation. His quiet strength, generosity, and enduring kindness left a mark on all who knew him.

Ray is survived by his five children and six beloved grandchildren—Haley, Brianna, Dillon, Nathan, and twins Reece and Cadence—all of whom he adored deeply. He also leaves behind two loving sisters and numerous extended family members from Joan’s side, with whom he shared close and meaningful relationships. Throughout his final months, Ray was surrounded by the unwavering love and support of his family. Despite facing significant health challenges, he demonstrated a remarkable will to live, guided by his faith and the love of those around him.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos on May 20, 2025 at 10:00 am. Burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in honor of Ray’s lifelong dedication to service and community.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Los Alamos Medical Center and Lovelace Medical Center for their care during Ray’s final days.

Raymond’s legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.

The family of Raymond Alcouffe has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the beautiful Espanola Valley.   505-747-7477
