Ramona Martinez

RAMONA “RAMONCITA” MARTINEZ, 92, a resident of Chimayo, passed away peacefully at her home with her loving family by her side following a brief illness on Friday, October 13, 2017. Ramona was preceded in death by her parents, Juan B. and Gabrielita Martinez; husband, Jose Leon Martinez; son, Sammy J. Martinez; brother, Anastacio Martinez and wife Adonelia, Abel Pedro Martinez and wife Arabella; grandsons, Benito Serrano, Chris Martinez, Gerald Olivas and sister-in-law, Adelita Martinez all of Chimayo. Mrs. Martinez is survived by her son, Nick Martinez; daughter-in-law, Yvonne Serrano Martinez; brother, Ernesto V. Martinez; nieces she considered as daughters, Susie, Rose and Berlinda Martinez; a nephew she considered a son, Benny Martinez all of Chimayo. Ramona had a special place in her heart for Carmen Cordova whom she loved dearly and considered her as a daughter. She also leaves behind grandchildren, Chris Serrano de Martinez of Chimayo, Norman Olivas of La Puebla, Paul Romero and wife Rachel of Albuquerque and Nadine Quintana and husband Ron of Albuquerque and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friend too numerous to mention. Ramona was actively involved and still employed with the Senior Citizens Center at the Española, Truchas and Chimayo locations. She participated in arts and crafts with the elderly and regularly attended the Senior Citizen dances. She also had many hobbies. She was an avid Senior Olympian with the Senior Citizens from the early 1990’s through 2008 and received many awards and ribbons. Ramona was the happiest with she was competing. She loved to cook, bake, garden and take care of her many plants and flowers. Most of all, Ramona loved to hunt; the walls of her home are covered with pictures during her hunting trips where she captured elk, buffalo and even a bear. Everyone who knew and loved Ramona will miss her smile, laughter, quick wit and kind heart. The Martinez family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Ambercare for the professional and compassionate care extended to Ramona during her brief illness. Public visitation will begin on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Burial to follow at the Nuestra Señora de Dolores Cemetery in Chimayo with the following serving as pallbearers, Chris Serrano, Jimmy S. Martinez, Randy Martinez, Henry Martinez, Paul Romero and Benny Martinez. Honorary pallbearers named are, Carmen Cordova, Yvette Trujillo, Yvonne Serrano Martinez, J. Lynn Geyer, Viola Martinez, Olivia Gallegos, Mary Cata, Archie Cordova, Susie Martinez, Rose Martinez, Berlinda Martinez, Ramona Chavez and Dora Trujillo. The family of Ramona “Ramoncita” Martinez has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
