Phil Benavidez, Sr. – Age 77 a resident of Chimayo passed away peacefully at home with his wife and son at his side on Saturday, February 11, 2012. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Angela Benavidez; parents: Herman and Eliza Benavidez; brothers: Alfred and Nap Benavidez and Herman Benavidez, Jr.; sisters: Mela Armijo and Lena Herrera. Phil was a lifelong member of the Painters Local 823, he enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. Mr. Benavidez served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Alicia Vela of Chimayo; son, Phil Benavidez, Jr. of Chimayo; grandchildren: Anthony Benavidez of Santa Fe, Rosean Lopez of Albuquerque, Raymond Beechan of Kileen, TX; sisters: Josephine and husband Jack Fleming of Rio Rancho and Lupe Sandoval of Santa Fe; great-grandchildren: Brandon and Isaiah Ortiz; and numerous other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Friday, February 17, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Santa Fe. Burial to follow at 2:15 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Jospeh Armijo, Steve Benavidez, Flip Sandoval, Paul Gomez, Joseph Paña and Albert Roybal. Honorary pallbearers named are, Lawrence Martinez, Manuel Tapis, Walter Holmes, David Fernandez and Orlando Lopez.
