ORLANDO MAESTAS, 80, a resident of Española, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014 following a lengthy illness surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vianes and Olivama Maestas; sister, Patty Vigil; beloved grandsons, Kevin D. Martinez, Nicholas Maestas and Gabriel Fresquez; parents-in-law, Conce and Esther Martinez; brothers-in-law, Manuel, Freddie and Eloy Martinez, Sam Garcia. Orlando was a loving husband, father, son and grandfather. He spent numerous years in law enforcement with the Española City Police and security guard at the Española Hospital. He was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War. Orlando loved his grandchildren and spent as much time as he could with them. He would take them to school and just loved spending time with them. Orlando and Bertha traveled to USS Juneau Navel Reunions and also traveled with his children as they were growing up. They covered numerous states across the Country. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. Mr. Maestas is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bertha Maestas of Española; children, David Maestas and wife Cindy of Los Luceros, Thomas Maestas of La Puebla, Marcia and husband Steve L. Martinez of El Duende and Jennifer Maestas of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Camille, Michela, Katherine, Angelo, SaraMaria Maestas and Joey Cross; step-grandchildren, Deandra of Medanales and Johnny Fresquez of Alcalde; great-grandchildren, Amaiya Seda of Santa Fe, Sophia and Eve Mondragon both of Medanales, Gabriel Fresquez of Alcalde; sisters, Dora Garcia of Guachupangue, Juanita Sisneros and husband Alex of Chamita, Socorro Brown and husband Rudy of El Duende and Eneda Sanchez and husband Eddie of Hernandez; sisters-in-law, Theresa Romero and husband Henry, Lorraine Abeyta of La Puebla and Lilly Martinez of Arroyo Seco; brothers-in-law, Jose Martinez and wife Viola of Santa Fe, Gilbert Martinez of El Paso, Texas, Tony Vigil of Albuquerque and Senator Richard C. Martinez of Española and numerous other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Espanola, with a burial to follow at 2:15 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Bobby Montoya, Steve L. Martinez, Gabriel Martinez, Leonard Valerio, Jim Sandoval, Mark and Joe Hernandez.
