Nieves Martinez

In loving memory of Nieves Martinez, who passed away on March 5th, 2023. A lifelong resident of Gallina, NM, was born on August 5th, 1955.

She is preceded in death by her parents Antonio and Alicia Jacquez, brother Donald Jacquez.

She is survived by her husband Max; sons James, Brian (Stephanie) and Daryl (Ashley); adored grandchildren Abrianna and Stanley; sisters Mary, Emily, Deenie and Valerie; brothers Roy and Kenny.

The second of eight children, she immediately brought joy and worked hard on the family ranch. Nieves went on to graduate from Coronado High School in 1974.

In 1973, she met Max and the two were inseparable from that point on. She loved growing up in the beautiful "La Placita" of Gallina where they created a life together and their family. Nieves & Max were married for over 46 years. She loved all her children immensely and continued to pour that love into her two grandchildren, her "consentidos", Abrianna & Stanley who she loved dearly.

Nieves was a wonderful and loving mother who gave her all to her family. Always unselfish and prioritizing others. Growing up our mother was always there for us, whether we needed help with our homework or just a shoulder to cry on. She was a woman of strong faith, pure heart and extreme patience. She instilled in us the importance of family, hard work and doing what is right. She also had great empathy for those less fortunate and was a lifelong donor to various charities. She passed on her great compassion in caring for all animals, in particular her special grand dog through all his health challenges making sure he never ran out of elk jerky or specially prepared home cooked meals. She was an extraordinary cook, talented in crafts like knitting and intricate crocheting, loved gardening, word puzzles, traveling, and spending time outdoors. Above all things, she cherished spending time with her precious grand kids.

The size of the void she leaves in our hearts is equivalent to amount of love we have for her which is immeasurable.

A Public Viewing will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 5:30 pm, followed by a Rosary at 6:00 pm in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel at DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola, NM. A Rosary will be recited at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church In Gallina, NM, on Friday, March 10, 2023, at 10:00 am, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 am.  Burial will follow at the Gallina Cemetery.

Serving as Pallbearers are Roy Jacquez, Jeffrey Jacquez, Lucas Trujillo, Archie Maestas, Conrad Martinez, and Jonathan Knoell. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Abrianna and Stanley Martinez.
