NELLWYN BROOKHART TRUJILLO, a resident of Española, was born on March 28, 1921 in Rural Indiana. She went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, having lived just short of 91 years. Nell was married to Max Trujillo of Vallecitos, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Trujillo is survived by her brother, Gilbert (Mary Anna) Brookhart of Fort Wayne, Indiana; nieces and nephews and their families, including Herbert Trujillo and Jeannie Trujillo (Rick) Valdez and special friends, Severo and Aurora Gonzales and Larry and Sharon Lauber of the valley. Nellwyn’s mother and grandmother died when she was young and she was raised by foster parents. She dedicated her life to serving the Lord through her church’s mission program, which was the emphasis of her life. She attended college and became an elementary teacher. She felt the call to serve her Lord and was ordained a minister missionary of the United Brethern, now the United Methodist Church. She was appointed to the McCurdy Mission Schools, mostly Vallecitos. When Vallecitos closed she taught at Ojo Caliente and Mesa Vista Schools. After the death of Max, she moved to Española where she volunteered with “Let’s Read”, English as a second language and other organizations, including tutoring with Northern New Mexico Community College. She was an avid music lover, playing for churches, teaching piano and singing in choirs. She traveled to Jerusalem, Europe and many other places after her retirement. Nellwyn is fondly remembered by her many students, friends and family. In recent years, due to ill health she has lived in the Española Valley Nursing Home. Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. A service celebrating Nell’s life will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Santa Cruz United Methodist Church in Española, followed by a fellowship meal. Burial will be at the Vallecitos Cemetery next to her husband, Max. Memorial gifts may be made to the Santa Cruz United Methodist Church or McCurdy School. The family of Nellwyn Brookhart Trujillo has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.\r\n
