Monika Romero

MONIKA ROMERO, 75, a resident of La Mesilla, passed away of a long-fought illness on Saturday, May 18, 2019.  Monika was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Romero; parents, Ottis Mathes; brother, Peter Mathes; sisters-in-law, Linda Franco, Loren Pacheco, Angelina Arguello, brother-in-law, John Romero.  Monika was born in Berlin Germany on September 1, 1943. She had a memorable childhood brought up in a time of war and depression. Despite an upbringing in constant hostility. Monika worked and studied hard to gain employment for the government at the age of 18.  Monika had a vast desire for intellectual knowledge and was an avid reader.  Monika later became employed by the State of New Mexico for OnGuard Services as a computer analyst where she retired after 25 years of employment. Monika was a beautiful, unique, carefree sprit that everybody loved and admired.  Monika was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, family member and friend.  She was a traveler and a collector of anything that caught her eye. Monika saw the beauty and good in everything. She had a divine love for nature and enjoyed landscaping where she spent many hours creating her own eccentric, beautiful sanctuary.  Monika was an extraordinary and spiritual woman. She was passionate about life and could be stubborn at times. Monika loved her life and the memories she created with family and friends. She will forever be loved and missed. Monika was survived by her son, Mike Mathes and fiancé Nicki Ripley of Artesia, NM; two grandsons, Bryan and Mikey Mathes both of Artesia, NM; step daughter, Misty Romero of Colorado; sisters-in-law, Mary Garcia of La Mesilla, Patsy Roybal and husband Patrick of Denver, CO., and Lillian Lopez of Rodarte, NM, brother-in-law, Nelson Romero and wife Esther of Espanola and Tito Romero of Albuquerque and numerous relatives and friends. Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory.
