Miguelita “Maggie” Cajete Salazar, lovingly known as Jo-Povi, was born on July 9, 1923, to Maria Naranjo Cajete and Alexander Cajete in Santa Clara Pueblo, NM. On March 19, 2025, she peacefully passed into the arms of the Lord at her home surrounded by love. Miguelita was the oldest living member of Santa Clara Pueblo at the time of her passing and was adored by all who knew her.
She shared 75 wonderful years with her soulmate, Alex Salazar, with whom she raised seven beautiful children. As a devoted wife, loving mother, and doting grandmother, Miguelita's home was always a place of warmth and nourishment. Her famous motto, “Eat good!” ensured that everyone who visited her left with full bellies and hearts full of love.
Miguelita is now reunited with her beloved Alex; sons Gilbert and Richard “Paul”; daughters-in-law Barbara and Rita; son-in-law Richard (Dick) Jamieson; and grandchildren Stephen, Melissa, Kenneth and Miguel.
She is survived by her children Jeanette, Michael (Sandra), Virginia (Otis), Bernadette (Robert), and Christopher; daughter-in-law Anita Salazar; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Her legacy of love, family, and laughter will live on forever in the hearts of all blessed to know her.
A rosary will begin on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 6:00 pm in the Chapel of Peace of De Vargas Funeral Home in Espanola, NM. A Funeral Mass will be on Monday, March 24, 2025, at 8:30 am in Santa Clara Catholic Church, with burial to follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 11:00 am.
