Max S. Salazar, 91, a resident of Tierra Amarilla, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2016 in Española following a brief illness. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Sabine and Carlotta (Ulibarri) Salazar; brothers and sisters, Rufina Salazar, Ascension Goodnight, Margaret Garcia, Aleja Salazar, and Victor Salazar; two nephews he was very close to, Lester and Gilbert Salazar. Max was a World War II veteran and served his country during World War II in the naval service in the United States of America. Max was a proud recipient of the victory medal of World War II. He became a proud and active member of the VFW Montoya Post 8448 in Tierra Amarilla. When he finished serving his country, he returned home where he worked construction for about 20 years. He then began working and retired from the state of New Mexico parks and recreation department. Upon his retirement, he spent most of his days at the family ranch in Tierra Amarilla. He was an avid rancher and farmer. Mr. Salazar is survived by his companion of 45 years, Adela Martinez of Chama; siblings, Antonio (Esperanza) Salazar of Utah and Helena Maestas of Utah and many nieces and nephews along with step-children and step-grandchildren whom he spent a lot of time with. A rosary will be recited on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the San Jose Catholic Church in Los Ojos with Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Sabino Salazar, Victor Salazar, Jr, Giles Garcia, Carl Manzanares, David Salazar, and Jimmy Salas. Honorary pallbearers will be the active members of VFW Montoya, Post 8448 in Tierra Amarilla. The family of Max would like to thank the staff at the Española Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their tireless dedication and support while Max was a resident. The family of Max S.
