MAX W. MARTINEZ, 83, a resident of Alcalde, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016. He was born on August 8, 1932 to Max and Mercedes Martinez. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Evangeline Martinez; daughter, Pamela Martinez Maestas; grandson, Max Marcos Martinez; brothers, Efren, Ben, Peter and sister, Loyola Quintana; brother-in-law, Sam Gallegos; niece and nephew, Louie Sattler, Marcy Quintana, Tim Martinez, Eric and Marissa, Eddie Romero and Jacob Salazar. Max retired from the Española Public Schools as a Principle at the Alcalde Elementary, where he worked for 19 years, and at the Española Elementary where he worked for 7 years. He loved working on his orchard, his garden and going to the farmers market. He loved visiting with family and friends and working with kids. He was a very patient and caring man. His smile would light up the room and his eyes would sparkle. He will be missed dearly. Mr. Martinez is survived by his children, Tammy Ulibarri and husband Ronald, Max Martinez, Jr. and wife Rebecca; son-in-law, Richard Maestas ;grandchildren, Donna Martinez and husband Jason, Justin Ulibarri, Ronaldo Ulibarri and wife Amanda, Jordan, Jared, Jacelynn, Dr. Erika Maestas and Nicholas Maestas; great-grandson, Garret; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ciprano and Charlotte Martinez, Robert and Marcella Martinez, Nora (Norie) Gallegos, Alice Martinez, Leo Quintana, Lawra and Juan Martinez, Helen Metzler; his loving niece, April Sattler and her son, Estevan Sanchez and many God-children, nephews and nieces. A special thanks to Amelia Holguin and Lupe and Antonio Carvalla for the loving care they provided to Max. Public visitation will begin on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Alcalde.
