Matthew Atencio

MATTHEW J. ATENCIO, 44, a resident of El Duende, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2019 peacefully surrounded by his family. Matthew was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Atencio; maternal grandparents, Tomas and Pablita Borrego, paternal grandparents, Antonio and Tomasita Atencio. He was dedicated to his work family and U.S. Postal Service. He liked photography and spoiling his nephews, nieces and always shopping for gifts for them. He was loved and will be missed dearly. Matthew is survived by his parents, Antonio and Lourdes Atencio of El Duende; siblings, Anthony Atencio and companion Yvette Romero of El Duende, Eva Martinez and husband Johnny of El Duende, Larry Atencio and wife Cathy of Alcalde, Emilio Atencio and wife Shirley of San Pedro, and Pam Atencio of El Duende; nieces and nephews, Crystal, Larry Jr., Nicole, Stephanie, Samantha, Alyson, Anissa, Donovan, Andres, Devin and Landon, and numerous other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas & Crematory, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 16, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh. Burial to follow at the San Jose Catholic Cemetery in Hernandez with the following serving as pallbearers, Larry Atencio, Jr., Manuel Baca, Donovan, Devin, and Landon Atencio and JoeRay Borrego. Honorary pallbearers named are, Anthony, Larry, and Emilio Atencio, Johnny Martinez and Nathaniel Salazar. The family of Matthew J. Atencio has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley.
