Mary A. Romero, age 90, a resident of Fairview, joined her husband, Juan A. Romero and other family members in Heaven on Saturday, July 30, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, Medardo and Catharina Abeyta of Abiquiu; her late 1st husband Juan A. Maez; sons, Billy Maez and Johnny Romero; great-grandson, Paul William Martinez; brothers, Manuel, Nicolas, and Ernesto Abeyta; sisters, Matilda Martinez and Elvira Gutierrez.
Mary was born in Arboles, La Plata County, Colorado on October 22, 1925. She was the youngest and the last survivor of six siblings. She was a high school graduate of Tierra Amarilla. Mary served her country as a member of the United States Nurse Corps during World War II. She was an active member and president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her children, Emery Maez (Dolores), Veronica Fernandez (Jake), Vivian Martinez (Bernabe), Dr. Karen M. Romero, Margaret Trujillo (Lorenzo), Katherine Romero, Angela Romero, and Abran Romero (Renee); her grandchildren, Joseph Emery Maez, Juan Antonio Maez, Stephanie Martinez, James Atencio, Rosendo Atencio, Victoria Romero, Adelaido Martinez, Miguel Martinez, Michael Trujillo, Matthew Trujillo, Maria Maez, Christina Maez, Felicia Maez, and Billy Jo Maez, She is survived by 24 great grandchildren. She leaves a large extended family and friends.
Public visitation will begin on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada followed by internment at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 12:45 p.m. with the following grandsons serving as pallbearers, Joseph Emery Maez, Juan Antonio Maez, James Atencio, Rosendo Atencio, Adelaido Martinez, Miquel Martinez, Michael Trujillo, and Matthew Trujillo. Honorary pallbearers include Javier Martinez, Samuel Martinez, Mark Anthony Martinez, Lillyana Martinez and Victoria Romero. The family of Mary A.
