Mary Frances Ocaña

It is with heavy loving hearts the family of Mary Frances Griego Ocaña, announce the date she was called home to be with the Lord on September 17, 2023, in El Rito, New Mexico. Mary Ocaña was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend of the El Rito Community, the El Rito Elementary School, and the Northern New Mexico College, El Rito Campus.

She was born on November 9, 1942, in Servilleta Plaza, New Mexico.

Mary was daughter to Rosa Gallegos Griego and Feliberto Griego.

She is survived by her 3 sisters, Juanita Jaramillo, Vivian Griego, and Olympia Gonzales; and her 4 brothers Ted Gallegos, Manuel Griego, Robert Griego, and Murphy Griego.

Mary was a beloved wife to Joe Eutimio Ocaña; Mother of 5 children, Joyce Ocaña, Lola Ocaña, Tommy Ocaña, Arthur Ocaña and Nick Ocaña.

The dearly caring family members and friends involved in Mary’s daily life were Cristine Ocaña, Karen Herrera, Antonio Ocaña, Shannon McCarthy, and Emmalee Garcia. During her last days they filled the gaps where we could not.

She was the beloved grandmother of 6 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. She was known for her sincerity, unconditional love for her family, and gentle nurturing nature. Mary believed in discipline with love and hugs, and her charismatic personality endeared her to her entire family.

Mary's primary job was that of a loving mother and spouse. She dedicated a significant portion of her life to a highly rewarding career as a cook at El Rito Elementary School and a Maintenance Custodian at the Northern New Mexico College El Rito Campus. Mary derived immense joy from being around children, which is why she loved her job so much. After retiring, Mary and her husband, Eutemio Ocaña, moved in with their daughter Lola Ocaña and her granddaughter Lorie Sanchez to be closer to their immediate family. It was there that Mary spent her final days, surrounded by loved ones.

Mary attended the Ojo Caliente School District for her primary education. She was a devout worshipper at San Juan Nepomuceno Parish in El Rito, NM.

In her free time, Mary enjoyed going to the casino, finding entertainment and relaxation in the vibrant atmosphere.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 6:30 PM at DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola, NM. Rosary will follow at 7:00 PM. A mass will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023 at 10:00 AM at San Juan Nepomuceno Church in El Rito, NM. Burial to follow at El Rito Community Cemetery.
