Mary Agnes Jaramillo, 93, a longtime resident of Chili, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017.  She was born to Nerio and Antonia Sisneros on December 5, 1923 in El Guique, New Mexico.  After growing up in La Villita, she attended college at Highlands University earning her degree in Education.  Mary Agnes was a school teacher for 38 years, serving Northern New Mexico communities and children.  She always expressed the importance of education and reading.  After her retirement, she became an avid rancher.  She loved her cows and being out on the ranch.  Mary Agnes was named Cattlewoman of the Year in the State of New Mexico in 2002.  She also loved to garden and tend to her orchard.  She was a frequent vendor at the Espanola Farmers Market where she loved to interact with people from around the community, including her former students.  Mary Agnes was also a devoted member of the Catholic Church.  She was a member of the Sacred Heart Alter Society for many years.  She was very faithful and believed in the power of prayer.
She is survived by her only son, Raymond Jaramillo and wife Dianna; grandson, Anthony and wife Tanya; granddaughter, Ramona and husband Jacob Maestas all of Chili.  She has seven great-grandchildren, Elijah, Lucas, Xavier, Lauryn, Emma, Juaquin and David.  Mary Agnes and her loving husband of 47 years, Jose, served as padrinos for many children over the years. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews.  Mary Agnes is preceded in death by her husband, Jose; her brothers Tony and Rueben and her parents Nerio and Antonia Sisneros. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 9:00 am at Saint John the Baptist Church with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow at the San Jose Catholic Cemetery in Hernandez with the following serving as pallbearers, Anthony, Jacob, Elijah, Eugene, Tomas and Orlando. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Espanola Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made to the Alzheimer’s Research Association in honor of Mary Agnes. The family of Mary Agnes Jaramillo has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
