MARY V. MARTINEZ, 83, a resident of Cuarteles, went home peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, March 23, 2013 following a lengthy illness. She was born in Gallina on March 9, 1930. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwardo and Arsenia Valdez; husband, Arsenio Martinez; sons, Edwardo (Lalo), Johnny, Arsenio Jr., Gerald and Benny Martinez; brother, Frank Valdez; sisters, Alice Lucero, Audelia Herrera and Delma Valdez. Mary was a special mother, grandmother; great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved her family gatherings and was an excellent cook. She was a very active and outgoing person with a great sense of humor. She loved gardening and the outdoors. For many years she served as president of the Avedon Santa Cruz Senior Center. She was in the Senior Olympics where she acquired achievement awards and medals. She was a member of the VFW and the American Legion for many years. Mrs. Martinez is survived by her children, Virginia Martinez and husband Leroy, Lina Towles and husband Earl, Maggie Vigil and husband Lloyd, Ramon Martinez and wife Mayda, Steven Martinez and Joseph Martinez and wife Debbie; grandchildren, Chris Towles, Lisa Towles, Helen Campion (Ryan), Leroy Martinez, Jr. (Amber), Lloyd Vigil, Jr., Shelly Vigil (Tony), Josh Martinez (Jessica), Charles Martinez and Crystal Gallegos (Felipe); great-grandchildren, Ethan and Acelynn Towles, Gabriel Garcia, Rayne Serrano, David Martinez, Anjolie and Aubryana Gallegos, and Gerald and Jolene Campion; sisters, Lorraine Serna, Gloria Alberico, Romie Lovato, Mary Ann Valdez, Lolly Carillo and Francis Vasquez; brother, Eddie Valdez and numerous other relatives and friends. Public visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to follow at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada with burial to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery with the follow serving the family as pallbearers: Ramon, Steven and Josh Martinez, Chris Towles, Ryan Campion and Lloyd Vigil, Jr. The family of Mary V.
