MARTHA “BERNA” CARTER, 68, a resident of Santa Cruz, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2016. Martha was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth and Carmella Carter; grandchildren, Krystal Carter, Tika Maestas, and Rudy Sanchez; great-grandchildren, Harmony Tapia, and Elias Tena; brothers, Joe Gurule (Tita), and Carlos Gurule; sisters, Joan Ulibarri (Henry), Helen Letnicky (Jim); brother-in-law, Eugene Carter; sisters-in-law, Connie Gurule, Lottie Carter; close cousin, Maxine Lopez and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives and friends. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde C. Carter; parents, Antonio and Juanita Gurule; brothers, Robert, Leo, Mario, Rudy and Peter Gurule; god-daughter, Tyra Ulibarri; brothers-in-law, Bobby Ulibarri, Rogers, Ronnie, and Billie Carter, sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Crane and Frances Carter. Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada with the burial to follow at 11:15 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Serving the family as pallbearers are, Michael, Steven, Rudy, Rob, and John Gurule, Phil Fernandez, Carlos Encinias, Mike Cintas, and Jerry Martinez.
