Mariquita Cordova

Mariquita Cruz Cordova , a resident of White Rock, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband and all eight of her brothers and sisters. She lived 96 years and saw lots of changes. But for her the most important thing was her family. She married Melquiades Cordova in 1946. They moved to Los Alamos when their son Tommy was 5. She worked as a nanny and house cleaner for years. Because she did not drive, she walked to work every day.  Before she left for work every day, she would make a fresh stack of tortillas. She did not need a recipe; she had made tortillas for her family every day since she was 8 when her mother died. Marie worked for numerous restaurants like Philomena's and Viola's. She made the best red chile you ever tasted and used to tell the story that she helped Viola perfect her restaurant’s red chili. Marie loved lots of things, working in her yard, dancing with her husband Mel at the VFW, having coffee with her neighbor Shirley, camping and fishing. When fishing she was always the last one to put her pole away. But most of all she loved her son Tommy and her grandchildren, Ti Marisa Cordova-Albrecht and Melquiades Brooks Cordova. Being that she lived right behind the high school, Ti would watch soaps with her every afternoon after school; while Mel and his friends came over almost every day at lunch when they were in high school. Marie loved to share gifts. Family and friends were all recipients of her crocheted afghans, doilies, and pillows. Many of us have used her hand embroidered tea towels now wishing we had saved at least one just to admire. Christmas Eve was always festive with large pots of posole and red Chile, mounds of sopapillas, and biscochitoes. And her mincemeat empanadas were hoarded by the family to be enjoyed for breakfast the whole month of January. She leaves behind her only son, Tommy; her grandchildren, Ti (husband Jeremy) and Mel; great-grandsons, Ethan and Hunter Albrecht, and lots of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please give your loved ones a hug or call to tell them you love them. She will be buried with her husband at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.  A memorial with lots of food, like she would want, will be held at a later date. The family of Mariquita Cruz Cordova has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
