Maria Augustina "Tina" Lucero

Maria Augustina “Tina” Lucero, 87, a lifelong resident of El Rito, NM, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vicente and Maria Ignacia Lucero and her companion, Henry Vigil. 

Tina spent 29 years as a Headstart teacher with the Mesa Vista schools in El Rito where she taught multiple generations of families over those years. She loved tending to her flower garden and enjoyed traveling after retirement. Her sweet tooth made her a favorite amongst the kids, as did her love for arts and crafts. She enjoyed creating artwork, including painting and crocheting. Although quiet, she enjoyed the time spent with her family and friends. 

She is survived by her sister, who she considered a daughter, Marbella (Benny) Martinez and family; close cousins Viola (Joe) Madrid and family, Delia Trujillo and family, and Roman (Susie) Lopez and family; Goddaughters Katrina, Inez, and Godsister Cecilia. 

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the Presbyterian Hospice staff, especially Cha Cha Thompson, Lilliana Martinez, Rosie Lozano, and volunteer Paula Breaux. A special thank you to Dorain Maestas, Christine Trujillo and Dorothy Serrano for helping with her care. 

A Viewing is scheduled for Friday, July 19, 2024, at 5:30 pm in Espanola at the DeVargas Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church in El Rito, NM, at 9:00 am, Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 am with internment to follow at the Placitas Cemetery. 

Serving as pallbearers are Jose Martinez, Casiano Armenta, Desi Lopez, Daniel Ocaña, Joseph Madrid, Raymundo Trujillo, and Sammy Sisneros (honorary).
