Manuelita (Mela) Romero died on Monday, October 31, 2011 at her home, two months short of her 101th birthday. She was born in Pojoaque to Pablo Romero and Camila Romero de Rivera. She was the youngest of five children. Antonia (Tonita), Concepción (Chonita), José Maria and Alejandrino all predeceased her. She was famous as a cook, seamstress and flower gardener. She was a devoted member of the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Catholic Church in Pojoaque. Mela never married, but she had many nieces and nephews who were dear to her. Those who survive her are Isaudro (I.M.) Roybal, Lydia Trujillo, Benigno Roybal, Procopio(Jake) Roybal, Remigio (Remy) Roybal, Isabel Archuleta, Angelina (Angie) Archuleta, Pablo Romero, Delfinia Roybal, Consuelo (Connie) García, Alex Romero Jr., Noami Slater, Felipe (Phil) Romero, Toni Montoya and their families. Great, great-great, great-great-great nieces and nephews, whom she loved, also survive her. She was godmother to many children, and a friend to her neighbors in the valley. Many thanks to those relatives, neighbors and friends who cared for her in her last days. A rosary will be recited on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Catholic Church in Pojoaque. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Catholic Church in Pojoaque, with burial to take place at the Pojoaque cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the church.
