MANUEL R. (JOKER) MAES, 70, a lifelong resident of Santa Cruz, passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. He graduated in 1962 as a Crusader and then served in the US Army and spent time in Germany and other parts of Europe. He was involved in sports throughout his life both as an athlete and an official. He worked with the EVCA sports and recreation programs. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Manuel and Maria E. Maes; siblings, infant brother Bobby, Eugene and Carmen; paternal grandparents, Ramon and Carmelita Maez, maternal grandparents, Antonio and Manuelita Martinez. Mr. Maes is survived by his son, Dr. Damon Maes and wife Dr. Darleen Sandoval of Michigan; brothers, George (Helen), Ed (Edna), Rev. Clarence Maes, Matthew (Marilyn), Anthony (Denise Woody) and Alfred; nieces and nephews, Chris, Yvonne, Art, Jerome, Alicia and Ramona numerous aunts, uncles and many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated immediately after at 3:00 p.m. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
