Mabel P. Grey-Vigil 1949 ~ 2016
Mabel P. Grey-Vigil, wife, mother, sister and dear friend to all, died peacefully on May 20, 2016 at her home in Albuquerque.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, Tony E. and Connie O. Martinez, of Espanola. She is survived by her husband of 30 years Michael Vigil, daughter Denise Grey and wife Yvette of Albuquerque, step-daughter Yvonne Montgomery of Ft. Hood, Texas, sister Betty Martinez and husband Bob Janssen of Bernalillo, niece Tina Martinez and Donald Jaramillo of Ponderosa, brother Ernie J. Martinez and sons Anthony and Matthew of Santa Fe, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Mabel grew up in Los Alamos and Espanola. She worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1979 until retiring in 2014. Mabel was dedicated to her work as a software developer in support of national and global nuclear security applications. Throughout the years many of her colleagues became dear friends. While working full time she earned a cum laude Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the College of Santa Fe.
Mabel's community was very important to her. She believed in helping others maximize their potential. Mabel served as a technical advisor and mentored Espanola High School teams for the NM Supercomputing Challenge. The teams were quite successful under her tutelage, winning several awards. Four young women in the all-girls team went on to earn Bachelor of Science degrees. Mabel was a recipient of the Laboratory’s Distinguished Mentor Award. She also served as chairperson on LANL’s Diversity Council and was an active member of LANL’s Women’s Diversity Working Group.
Mabel was a free spirit who spoke her mind and had a great sense of adventure. She enjoyed reading, fishing and traveling. She took many RV road trips with her husband and their maltese. Mabel was an active member with the EXCEL RV Club and served as the club’s secretary for several years. She and Mike also enjoyed going on ocean cruises. While ziplining in Costa Rica Mabel was told she woke up the jungle with her yelling. Mabel was also a member of Holy Cross Catholic Daughters and served as a lector at Holy Cross Parish.
Public visitation will begin on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada, with a burial to follow at 12:45 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Thirteen months ago she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and courageously faced this illness head on. Mabel never realized how strong she was and how many she truly inspired.
