Luis “Louie” Alfonso Ulibarri, 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 29, 2016, surrounded by his family; after a brief courageous battle with cancer.
Louie was preceded in death by his parents Luis Alfonso, and Mary Herrera Ulibarri; sister, Rita Peralta; sister-in-law, Delilah Padilla; grandparents Manuel and Asencion Herrera, and Valentin and Gabriela Ulibarri.
Louie is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Irene Ulibarri; son, Joseph Ulibarri of Hobbs, NM, daughter Jeanette Dominguez and husband Ryan of Abiquiu; step-children, Chris Herrera and wife Irene of Espanola, Sabrina Lovato and Fiancé Rex of Velarde, Louie also raised a nephew, David Lovato of Espanola, and a niece, Darlene Ortiz and husband Daniel of San Juan; grandchildren, Jerica Maestas of Los Alamos, Arielle Ulibarri of Oklahoma, Crystal Barron of Florida, Donovan Rodriguez of Fuji, Japan (USMC), Oniesha Herrera, Christopher Herrera, Engelica Lovato, Neiamiah Camargo, Kimberly Ortiz, and Lexy Lovato of Espanola, great-grandchildren, Sierra and Silas Gonzales of Los Alamos, Maliyah Simon of Florida, Nehemiah and Isiah Robinson of Florida, Massiah and Nyiah Barron of Florida. Mother-in-law Lucy Lovato who loved and cared for Louie like a son; sisters, Carmen Garcia of Albuquerque, Loyola Cain of Arkansas and Erlinda Romero of Las Vegas, NM; sisters-in-law, Rosie Crawford and husband Jerry of Nevada, and Lupe Ortiz of Espanola; brothers-in-law, Emilio Ortega of Espanola, and Nathan Lovato and wife Stephanie of Espanola, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Louie joined the US Army in 1963 and was stationed in Istanbul, Turkey, during the Vietnam conflict. He served as a Cryptographer in the Communications Center after attending school in Iowa. He later worked as a Linotype Typesetter and Printer for the Santa Rosa News and the Rio Grande Sun for more than 35 years. Louie was an avid bowler and bowled many 300 games in his life time. He was a right-handed bowler with a ‘left-handed hook’, in which he called it “the backup ball”.  He participated in bowling during the Senior Olympics and undoubtedly shot a skillful game of pool.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Valley Bible Baptist Church in Arroyo Seco, with Pastor Brian McMath officiating the service.  Burial will be held Friday, January 6, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery.  The family of Luis “Louie” Alfonso Ulibarri has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477-www.devargasfuneral.com
