Luis A. Peña (Luis Loco), 65, of Servilleta Plaza, NM went to be with our Lord on February 9, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 28, 1956 to Dennis and Manuelita Peña. He graduated in 1975 from Mesa Vista High School and attended trade school in El Rito, NM. As an avid outdoorsman, Luis was an accomplished hunter, rancher and acequiero and worked towards land grant defense & forest access alongside his lifelong friend, Ike DeVargas. Luis worked over 20 years in the logging industry, worked as a wildland firefighter and retired as a heavy equipment operator for Rio Arriba County. Luis was active in his faith as an Hermano with Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestra Padre Jesus de Nazareno in Las Tablas, NM. Luis was an old soul that was known for his generous heart and his good sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife and companion of 46 years, Renee Peña, his son Luis J. (Beata) and his daughters Monica, Antima and Angela Peña. Luis is also survived by his grandchildren Maya (Jasper), Kateri & Amos Peña and Dominic Cardenas, with whom he spent lots of time. Luis is survived by his sisters Margaret Peña, Veronica Peña, Irene Baldonado, Theresa Griego-Parlante and his lifelong friend Gilbert Varela, his in-laws David & Juanita Alire, brothers-in-law Rick (Faylene) Alire, Ken (Yvonne) Alire, sister-in-law Lori Lynn Alire and many nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dennis and Manuelita Peña, siblings Dennis Jr. and Julian Peña, Angelina Tena, maternal grandmother Rosa Griego and brother-in-law David Lloyd Alire.
A rosary will take place on February 28, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ojo Caliente, NM at 9:00 AM, and a mass at 10:00 AM. Burial to follow in Servilleta, NM.
Serving as pallbearers are Eddie Gallegos, Tomas Ocaña, Luis Griego, Manny Griego, Gilbert Varela, Dillan Peña, Victoria Sisneros, and Valerie Alire. Honorary pallbearers are his godchildren Stevan, Moises, and Timothy Peña, and Yvette Gutierrez.
Luis was loved dearly, and he will be greatly missed.
Due to COVID, the family is requesting there not be a condolence line and masks are required.
