Louisa Martínez Benton, age 82, passed away in Albuquerque on Saturday, February 20, 2016 after several years of declining health. She was born on June 9, 1933, to José Guadalupe Martínez and Luisa Romero Martínez, of Guachupangue, New Mexico.
In 1950, Louisa married Margarito Merced "Mercy" Baca, from Santa Fe. They had five children together. In 1967, she married Clifford Dean “Kip” Benton, Jr., to whom she was married until his death in 2010. Louisa was a long-time employee of the Los Alamos Laboratory. She and Kip, who was a board member of Zia Credit Union, often traveled together on Credit Union business as well a traveling with family and friends.
Louisa was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She found room in her heart for everyone she knew. And she seemed to know everyone in New Mexico. She was light-hearted, fun-loving and generous. She loved music and telenovelas. No one was ever turned away from her door. She was never one to judge another’s circumstances or choices. She gave loving support to any of her family or friends who needed it. Many have recalled the kindness that she showed to them. She was Grandma Nanny to many people besides her grandchildren.
Louisa is survived by three siblings, Rosario Fiorillo, Gloria Maestas and Manuel Martínez and three children, Steve Baca (Menlo Park, California), Dorothy Baca (Albuquerque, New Mexico) and María Dolores Baca (Albuquerque, New Mexico). Two sons preceded her in death, David Baca and Walter L. Baca. Ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive her.
A rosary will be prayed in her behalf on Friday, March 11, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Saturday, March 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 908 Calle Rosario. Burial to follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Española. Luncheon and memorial to follow burial at 1:00 pm at the Beatrice Martínez Senior Center, 735 Vietnam Veterans Road, Española, NM 87532.
