Lizzie “GG” Medina, 91, a lifelong resident of Alcalde, passed away at home Wednesday, September 24, 2014 with her family by her side. She graduated from Santa Cruz High School and after graduation, during World War II, Lizzie along with her sister’s Frances and Anita, moved to Chula Vista, CA where they were employed as the iconic “Rosie the Riveter’s”. Upon her return to New Mexico, she attended Highland’s University. Her employment included teaching, many years at Pueblo Drugs, and eventual retirement from Northern New Mexico Community College. She enjoyed cooking for others and her family loved her red chile enchiladas, tortillas, and garbanzo beans. Lizzie was a devout Catholic attending St. Anne’s Church services every Sunday while she was able to. Lizzie was preceded in death by her parents, Camilo and Trinidad Medina; daughter, Bernice Medina-Gutierrez; sisters, Irene (Benito), Josephine (Pete), and Frances (Joe); brothers, Edward (Aurora) and Camilo Jr.; brother-in-law, Juan as well as several other relatives. Lizzie is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Elaine Martinez; sister, Anita Martinez; son-in-law Arsenio Gutierrez; grandchildren, Amanda Martinez and Adam (Brenda) Martinez; great-grandchildren, Roxanne, Allen, Lorenzo, Cheyanne, Ayden and Alize; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. The family would like to give a special thanks to her caregivers Martha Bencomo, Mary Helen Morales, Virginia Sanchez, and Nurse Devonne Naranjo. A rosary will be recited on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Alcalde. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 29, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Alcalde, with a burial to follow at La Villita Cemetery. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be her son-in-law and all her nephews. The family of Lizzie Medina has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
