Linda Pedro, 68, a long-time resident of Chimayoì was blessed to attain her wish to die in her own home Tuesday, January 13, 2015. After spending more days in hospital rooms the past five months than at home, she had resisted three serious and totally different medical events.\r\nLinda’s most recognizable feature was her confinement to a wheelchair as a quadriplegic since a car accident in 1965. A more important feature soon to be noticed by anyone who knew her was her ability to preside over family, friends, political associates and governmental officials. With her deep desire to remain in her own home to raise her family, Linda - with resolve and willpower - moved through the US legal system aided by visionary attorneys to achieve that goal. Landmark court cases and local skirmishes allowed her and anyone faced with similar adversities who followed her to also remain at home with proper support to be with family. She faced many adversaries and adversities. She was a powerful person. She overcame.\r\nWith a strong interest in justice for people and the planet, Linda was present at gatherings in the formative years of La Raza Unida, the Rainbow Coalition of the Rio Arriba County Democratic Party and at anti-nuclear events. She organized and led marches from El Santuario de Chimayoì to Los Alamos and from Santa Cruz to El Santuario. Linda was defined as an artist by her artwork and art education of local children through her Galería Guadalupana.\r\nLinda was preceded in death by her father, James Allander and her mother, Reyna María Martínez. She is survived by her son, Daniel Pedro, daughter-in-law Lynn, grandson James, granddaughters Courtney and Caitlin and husband Bobby Pedro. With roots in Scott, Apache and Northern New Mexico Hispanic cultures along with her affiliation with the Native American Church, nearly everyone in her wide circle was considered to be a grandparent, parent, brother, sister, child or cousin. Many children spent formative years in her household as if they were her own children. Longtime caregivers, their spouses and children were also an important part of the family.\r\nA memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Burial to follow at the Nuestra Señora de Dolores Cemetery in Chimayo.
