Leopoldo "Leo" Duran - Age 43 - Pe� Duran

Leopoldo “Leo” Bernabe Duran – Age 43, a resident of Peñasco and a graduate of Peñasco High School passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2011. He joined the military with the US Army Rangers. He received many acolates including Army Achievement Award, Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service ribbon and the Sharp shooters badge. He served in the Gulf War Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He moved to Laurel, Montana and was the Chapter President of the Laurel JC’s, receiving many honors and awards. He was current President of the Laurel hometown troops. He was instrumental in planning and working on several major community fund raisers in Laurel, including the Annual Laurel JC’s July 3rd and July 4th street dance and pancake breakfast. He hosted the JC casino night fund raiser. He did the Easter egg hunt for community social, Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets and several fund raisers for needy families. His latest project was organizing the Laurel Hometown troops casino night fund raisers at the Shrine auditorium. He was preceded in death by his father; Erminio Duran of Peñasco, N.M. and all his grandparents and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his loving wife; Stephanie and mother; Rosalita Duran. Siblings; Juan Duran, Aurora Tsosie and husband Robert, Erminio Duran, Jr. and Juanita, Rumalda Duran Sale and husband Salei and Elee Duran and several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Peñasco with burial to be held on a later date.
