Leonard Charles Ferran, age 69, a resident of Abiquiu, NM, passed away unexpectedly on September 29, 2024. Leonard was born on September 23, 1955, in Espanola, NM, to Bennie (Suazo) and Joe Ferran Jr. He graduated from Los Alamos High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in social anthropology and a minor in marketing from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.
Leonard was a devoted teacher and worked for several schools within Rio Arriba County. He touched the lives of his students and truly made an impact. Anyone that knew Leonard knew that he had a passion for helping others by sharing his life experiences and knowledge. Following his career in education, he worked security for the Georgia O’Keeffe Foundation for 10 years.
Leonard was a free spirit and enjoyed an unconventional life. He enjoyed listening to Rock n Roll and loved Pink Floyd. His favorite television shows were MASH, Hogan’s Heroes and Mission Impossible. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, hunting arrow heads and spending time with his daughter, Anastasia. He was an avid animal lover and especially his cats that he loved so dearly.
He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle. His favorite thing to do was to facetime with his only granddaughter, Piper Jo. She was the apple of his eye.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie and Joe, cousins Augustine and Merlinda Garcia whom he had a special bond with, as well as his sister-in-law Arla Ferran.
He is survived by his daughter Anastasia Ferran, granddaughter Piper Jo Gillam-Ferran, brother Gilbert (Roberta) Ferran, two nieces Rebecca Cottone (Mike) and Megan Horn-Molett(Mitchell), and several great nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
