On December 18, 2016, our family suffered another great loss. Our father Leonard Ronnie Atencio (55), a resident of Dixon and formerly of Leadville, Colorado, passed away only ten days after the death of his father Elias from complications of a short illness. Leonard (Ronnie) was preceded in death by his Grandparents Anastasio and Bersabe Atencio, and Perfecto and Dora Sanchez. His Parents; Elias and Helen (Sanchez) Atencio. Siblings; Bernadette, Annette and Richard Atencio. Leonard was a wonderful son, husband, father, brother and friend who loved his family dearly. He was the Founder and President of the 1980’s Chicano Movement Low-Rider Car Club of Dixon, NM in which he took great pride, sharing stories about his heydays until the time of his death.
Leonard (Ronnie) was a cement finisher by trade, and was well known for his work throughout New Mexico, as he aimed to please his employers and customers. He was a hard worker and took pride in anything he did, never hesitating to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Leonard was a member of the NM Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons Local Union for 30 years. Throughout his tenure, he was employed by Davis & Associates LLC., Johnson Controls Inc., and Sarcon Construction.
Leonard leaves behind a legacy through his children; Michael Ronnie, and Angela Atencio both of Dixon, the mother of his children, Cindy (Suazo) Atencio of Dixon; uncles Gabriel Atencio (Tessie) of Espanola, Eugene Atencio of Rio Rancho and Tony Atencio of Las Vegas, NM, aunts Ida Apodaca of Albuquerque, Bernice Martinez of Utah, and special aunt Ramona Atencio of Santa Fe; cousins, Debbie, Gabriel, Roger, Floyd, Eugene, Rose and numerous great-cousins. Leonard will be missed by all who knew and loved him, and leaves behind many wonderful memories, numerous friends, and friends who were like family including Donald Atencio, and Adrian Gonzales. A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Saturday, January 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a burial to take place at a later date.
