JULIAN M. CHÁVEZ, 79, a lifelong resident of Alcalde, was called to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 03, 2016 while surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francisco “Frank” P. Chávez and Frances D. Chávez, infant twin sister, infant brother Julian; brother, Frank E. Chávez; son, Randall Scott Chávez, Sr., and his dear granddaughter, Jennifer E. Chávez.
Julian is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lupita A. Chávez of Alcalde; his beloved daughter, Wanda Medina (Kenny); sons, Andrew J. Chávez, Sr. (Jennifer) and Steve Chávez (Margie); grandchildren he loved dearly, Andrew J. Chávez, Jr. (Cassandra), Juliana “Amber” Chávez, Randall Chávez, Jr., Chelsea Chávez and Cory Chávez; sisters, Theresa Sanchez, Beatrice Abeyta (Leonard), Claudia Rene Pallet (Joe); brothers and sisters-in-law, Flores Chávez, Lillian Saiz (David), Shirley Martinez (Nelson), Joann Miller (Dale), Geri Martinez and Darlene Naranjo, Adonais Martinez (Faby), and Clifford Martinez (Angie); and his dogs that he truly adored, Shorty and Miagui.
Julian, by profession, was a factory trained/certified auto paint and body service technician. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Hunter Ford, Art Houle Chevrolet and Harold Brock Chevrolet for numerous years in the Española Valley; he came out of his retirement to work as a Regional Transportation District (RTD) transit driver. Julian had many hobbies and was a skilled craftsman in wood, and tin projects; his forward thinking and ingenuity allowed him to create “something out of nothing”. His “tin man” projects have been seen at many arts and crafts shows through-out the valley. A special talent dear to him, which he acquired at a very young age, was his musical ability to sing, write music, play the guitar, harmonica, trumpet and numerous other musical instruments.  Julian was a recording artist and founder/road-manager of several bands including Los Cuatro Chavez, Chavez Y Compania, and La Lluvia band. Julian was a retired volunteer fire fighter for the Velarde Volunteer Fire Department, having served twenty-five years of dedicated service with the department.
Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Alcalde with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A memorial mass to be celebrated on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Alcalde. Burial to follow at the La Villita Catholic Cemetery with with immediate family serving as pallbearers; honorary pallbearers are Adonais Martinez, Louis Sanchez, Armando Sanchez and all former and current members of the Velarde Volunteer Fire Department.
The family of Julian M. Chavez has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home and Crematory of the Española Valley.
