JUDITH CAROLYN PRUETT BATEMAN, 72, a resident of Los Alamos, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, March 20, 2012. Judith is best remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her loving ways will be greatly missed by her husband of 48 years, Alfred Bateman; her children, Andy (Lindsay), Jef (Sheryl) and Elizabeth Bateman; grandchildren, Lydia, Amelia and Josephine. Judith was preceded in death by her parents, Carter and Edna Pruett and her brother, Bill Pruett. Judith was born in St. Louis, Missouri and was a lifelong Cardinals fan. She graduated from Normandy High School in 1957 and moved to Los Alamos that year with her family and attended college at the University of New Mexico. She worked as an administrative assistant at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and the Los Alamos Branch of the First National Bank in Santa Fe in the early 1960’s and as an administrative assistant in White Rock United Methodist Church in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. She was also a popular substitute teacher at Piñon Elementary School in the 1970’s and was a successful Avon Representative for many years.\r\nJudith’s hobbies included drawing, crocheting and embroidery and she made numerous prayer shawls as gifts. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends and bragging about her children and grandchildren. She never missed a birthday or special occasion. Judith loved children and always greeted children with a warm smile and hug.\r\nShe was most proud of her role as a mother, and Judith excelled in that role.\r\nFamily, friends, and acquaintances of Judith are invited to attend a memorial service on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the White Rock United Methodist Church. Burial to follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos.\r\nIn lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the charity of your choice, particularly charities that support children or to Friends Through the Fight, a charity which her daughter, Elizabeth, started to help young adults who suffer from a terminal illness. The family of Judith Carolyn Pruett Bateman has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
