Jose Modesto Madrid, 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at his home in Canjilon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Madrid; parents, Genaro and Francisquita; brother, Juan-Isidro (Johnny) Madrid, sister, Georgia (Golla) Martinez; son, Jose (Louie) Trujillo. He worked for Gates Rubber Company for 33 years where he retired. Upon his retirement he moved his family to Canjilon where he continued ranching and farming his dad’s land. Modesto enjoyed tending to cattle and sheep and working with his tractors. He spent hours splitting wood and bucking hay. He especially enjoyed sharing stories with family and friends about life experiences of working the ranch with his father. Modesto was married to his wife for 49 years. He is survived by his sons, Genaro Madrid (Marty), Billy Madrid (Isabel), Joey Madrid, David Madrid (Mary); daughters, Jessica Madrid, Arleen Turnbow (Ben), Stella Madrid, Sandy Trujillo (Ramon); sisters, Cora Martinez (Jimmy), Grace Bustos, Rose Madrid and Betty Galaz; grandchildren, Cherilyn Koller, Valerie Koller, Wyatt Madrid, Morgan Madrid, Shae Madrid, Joseph Madrid, Geraldine Chavez, Samantha Gallegos, Cassandra Vigil, Beverly Madrid, Ashley Madrid and many great and great-great grandchildren; raised like his own children, Michael Sandoval, Mark Sandoval, Joseph (JoJo) Valdez, Vernon Martinez and Robert (Cipie) Maez and numerous other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited on Friday, November 7, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Santo Nino de Atocha Catholic Church in Cebolla with the Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at the Cebolla Cemetery. The following serving as pallbearers, Michael Sandoval, Mark Sandoval, Vernon Martinez, Robert (Sipie) Maez, Johnny Montoya, Alex Leyba, Eddie Sanchez and Larry Martinez. Honorary pallbearers; Rudy Garcia, Michael Martinez, Joseph Madrid, Wyatt Madrid, Cody Turnbow, Joshua Archuleta, Floyd Martinez, Joseph (JoJo) Valdez, Eddie Mireles and Travis Binion. The family of Modesto Madrid has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
