\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n JOSE E. “EPPIE” VIGIL, 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 4, 2010 after a lengthy illness. Eppie was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 32 years, his parents, his sister, Maizie Weaver; brothers, Johnny and Mike; and niece, Mary Ann Vallejos. Eppie, a life-long resident of Española was the son of Juan Jose Vigil and Felipa Martinez and was born on August 14, 1932. Eppie graduated from Española High School. He attended El Camino College in El Camino, California and received a BA in Political Science from UCLA. He taught at Holy Cross School, Santa Cruz, NM, where he was also the baseball and basketball coach; Jemez Mountain Schools, Gallina, NM; Española Municipal Schools and Northern New Mexico Community College until his retirement in 2005. He was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps from 1952 – 1955, where he served on the USS Curtiss, which was used to transport the Atomic Bomb to the Marshall Islands. He was very active in his community; he served as Española City Mayor, member of the Española City Council, Española Jaycees, Toastmasters and Scout Master. In 1968, he married the late and former Teodora Maria Martinez, daughter of David and Cidia Martinez of Taos, NM. They had a daughter, Monica Lynn, and son, Mark Anthony. His pride and joy were his grandchildren. Eppie spent time cheering them on at all their games. Mr. Vigil is survived by his daughter, Monica Vigil, and partner, Tomas L. Martinez; and his son, Mark, and partner, Senaida De Aguero; grandchildren: Shannon Vigil, Danny Martinez, Marisa Martinez and Faith Vigil all of Española, NM. Sisters: Pita Vallejos, Los Alamos; Marie Vigil, Albuquerque; brothers: Gus (Elaine), Lovington; Pete (Kim) from Colorado Springs, CO; former son-in-law, Danny Martinez Sr. of Chimayo. Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Victor Martinez, Terry Wheeler, Danny Martinez, Tony Vallejos, Manny Atencio and Andrew Vallejos. Honorary pallbearers named are, Estevan Martinez, Mario Martinez, Gabriel Borrego, Antonio Garcia, Manuel Otero and Brian Vigil. The Vigil family has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. \r\n
