Jose “Chopo” Maria Abeyta Jr., 37, a resident of Los Brazos passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. Chopo was raised in Los Brazos and was a 1991 graduate of Escalante High School. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan, who also enjoyed hunting, fishing, horse racing and spending time with his close friends. He was well known amongst many in and around Northern New Mexico. Chopo lived in the Española Valley for many years until re-locating to Los Brazos in 2000. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Juan de Jesus Abeyta and Estefanita Gomez-Abeyta; maternal grandparents, Emilio Samora and Juanita Ulibarri-Samora; aunts, Cleotilde and Ruby Abeyta; uncle, Ernesto Samora. He is survived by his parents Jose Maria Sr. and Elviria Abeyta of Los Brazos; brother, Teodoro “Teddy” Abeyta and wife Roberta of El Guique; sister, Estefanita of Los Brazos; nieces: Lisa and Rosa Martinez of Los Brazos, Cheryl Abeyta of El Guique; nephews: Luis Martinez of Los Brazos, Timothy Struck of El Guique; several aunts, uncles and numerous friends. Public visitation will be held on Friday, September 10, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the San Jose Catholic Church in Los Ojos, New Mexico with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at San Jose Catholic Church in Los Ojos, with the burial to follow at the Las Nutrias Catholic Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Jeff Clem, Mark Martinez, Chris Samora, Ben Casados, Peter Sanchez, Kenny Duran, Napoleon Ulibarri, Alex Leyba, Ben Gallegos Jr., Ray Jaquez, Jeff Martinez, Gilbert Martinez.
