Jose Guadalupe “Lupe” Vigil 70, a lifelong resident of Española, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 21, 2015.  He was preceded in death by his parents Augustin and Bernadita Vigil, infant daughter Rosanne Vigil, son Brian Vigil, infant granddaughter Alyssia Martinez,  brothers Eddie, Willie and Alex Vigil and sister Elvira Karcher.  Lupe is survived by his wife of 50 years Theresa Vigil, daughters Bernadette Aragon and husband Thomas Aragon of Espanola; Cathy Vigil-Martinez and husband Victor Martinez of Chimayo, siblings Fred Vigil and wife Corine of Fort Bayard, Laura Caffey and husband Thurlow of Albuquerque; grandchildren Victoria Gonzalez, Christina and Jessica Aragon, Brandon Trujillo, Estevan and Mario Martinez, Robyn, Luiza and Noah Vigil; great grandchildren Jeremy and Divinity Gracia and family members  who he raised at various times in their lives, Benny Arellano, Gilbert Arellano, Patsy Lujan, Veronica Chacon, Margaret Lucero, and Arnold Gallegos and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.  Lupe graduated from Espanola Valley High School in 1963, worked as a school bus driver, and retired from Contel Telephone Company after 30 years of service.  After retirement, Lupe drove a bus for fire fighters who were deployed to various forest fires and was a substitute bus driver for the Espanola public schools. When he wasn’t at work, he spent his time tending to the family ranches in Abiquiu and Espanola raising horses and cattle.  Lupe was an active member of the Abiquiu Land Grant Association and Majordomo of the Acecia de Los Vigil’s, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a frequent participant in the morning coffee club at McDonalds. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, playing the guitar and helping out family members and friends with whatever they needed.  Lupe’s greatest passion was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; he attended all of their school related activities with pride. Public visitation will begin on Sunday, December 27, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. Memorial Mass  will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada. Burial will be held at a later date.    The Vigil family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Abuda and his staff at Espanola Family Care and Ambercare Hospice, especially Gina Binon, Claudette Pacheco and Daniel Molina for their loving and compassionate care they extended to him and our family during his  illness.   The family of Jose Guadalupe “Lupe” Vigil has entrusted the care of their beloved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home and Crematory of the Espanola Valley. 1-505-747-7477 or www.devargasfuneral.com
