JOSE FELIX SANDOVAL 92, born April 25, 1923 passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday September 16, 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Sandoval; parents, Fidel and Rebecca Sandoval; three brothers, Alferino, Jose Andres, and Frank Sandoval; two sisters, Trinidad Sanchez and Elizaida Sandoval. Jose Felix is the son of Fidel and Rebecca Sandoval of Rio Lucio, New Mexico.
Felix lived most of his life in New Mexico with his wife Lorraine of 67 years. As a youngster of the era, he had many chores, irrigating the garden, chopping wood, tending animals, harvesting crops, enharando la casa to name a few. Felix attended St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Penasco. When Jose Felix was a senior in high school, he was drafted into the Army and answered the “call of duty” to defend his country. He participated in several major campaigns launched by the United States during World War II, New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Leyte, and the Invasion of Luzon in the Philippines, a battle led by General Douglas MacArthur. He was awarded the Asian Pacific Campaign Medal for his service in the Pacific Theater. Felix came back from the war and proudly finished high school at the age of 23. There he met and married the love of his life Lorraine Roybal on January 25, 1947. He attended the local Trade School, learned woodworking and how to make Southwestern style furniture. Felix and Lorraine moved to Wyoming where he was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad for 10 years. In 1960 the family returned to his native homeland, New Mexico. He worked for the US Forest Service, Azotea Tunnel, and the New Mexico State Highway Department where he retired as Patrol Foreman. Felix was a dedicated, loving, compassionate, generous father, husband, grandfather, son, uncle, cousin, and friend. As a worker, Felix held high standards for himself, took pride in what he did, and always gave it his ultimate best. He was a deeply religious person and an active member of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Parish. Felix belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed horseback riding, gardening, fishing, sweets, and taking care of his cattle.
Jose Felix Sandoval is survived by three sons, and two daughters, Raymond Sandoval and wife Rita, Marie Romero and husband Isaac, Yolanda Trujillo and husband Henry, Eric Sandoval and wife Joyce, youngest son, Timothy Sandoval, ten grandchildren: Spring, Rodney, Tanya, Drucille, Rebecca, Alejandro, Desiree, Dayna, Andres, and Anna; six great-grandchildren: Desiree, Ashley, Alicia, Trinity, RJ, and Isaac.
Public visitation will begin on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Anthony de Pauda Catholic Church in Penasco with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. also at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in Penasco. Burial will be on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 11:15 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Rodney Sandoval, Alejandro Trujillo, Andres Trujillo, Drucille Romero, Dayna Sandoval, and Anna Trujillo. The family of Jose Felix Sandoval has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley.
