Jose Maestas

JOSE RUBEN MAESTAS , 92, a resident of Hernandez, our loving God called him home on Thursday, March 26, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cosme and Casandra Maestas, loving wife of 68 years, Otilia Gonzales Maestas; loving grandson, Troy Vasquez; brother, Max Maestas (Dora); sisters, Viola Gonzales (Fares); Julia Romero, Oralia (Marvin); great granddaughter, Katelin Vasquez Chavez. Ruben joined to US Navy in the early 40’s and was a World War II Veteran. He was a loving husband and father. He was a hard worker who worked in the mines in Leadville, CO for over 40 years until he retired. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gathering wood for the cold hard winter months. Most of all he loved his family. He lived in Leadville for many years and raised his 5 children there. In the early 1990’s they moved to Hernandez where he and his wife lived the last days of life. Mr. Maestas is survived by his children, Jerry Maestas (MaryAnn), Rudy Maestas (Dorothy), Hazel Quintana (Julian), and Sandra Vasquez (Bonifacio), Debbie Cisneros (Eli); grandchildren, Kenneth (Rebecca) and Nathan (Yvonne) Quintana, Steven Maestas, Erica Vasquez (Steve Chavez), Melissa and Jennifer Maestas, Bridget Cisneros, and Bernadette Frank (Buck), sister, Emma Romero (Tony); brother-in-law, Pablo Romero; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and many other close relatives, Daizzara, Jacqueline, Tamren, Jaylene, Nathan, Jr., Melinda Quintana, Isaac, Dillon and Amanda Vasquez and numerous other family and friends. Service are pending at this time. The family would like give special thanks and love to his granddaughter, Erica Vasquez for the love and care she gave her grandpa when he needed it most. Thank you to Ambercare, especially Elloida and Mary Beth who were his nurses and caretakers. The family of Jose Ruben Maestas has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
