Jose “Richard” Hilario Garcia , born on December 4, 1952, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2020 at 67 years old. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by parents, Ernesto and Annie Garcia; brothers, Robert and Joe Garcia; sister, Alice Gonzalez; brother-in-law, Karl Schmidbauer, and in-laws, Ruben and Teresita Salazar of Chamita. He is survived by his wife, Lorena Salazar-Garcia; two sons, Antonio and Jose Garcia, daughter, Daune Garcia; grandson, Oliver Day; brother, Orlando Garcia (Rachel Morales); sister, Mary Schmidbauer, and numerous cousins and nieces and nephews from the entire Garcia, Serrano, and Salazar families. Richard was born in El Guache, and was raised on a small farm until the age of 5, when his family relocated to Los Angeles, CA. After attending Lennox High School in Los Angeles, he enlisted in the US Marine Corp at Camp Pendleton. Richard held various employment in CA including: US Customs Broker and established the Richard Garcia Customs House Broker company. In 1996 Richard returned to NM and worked for Warner Trucking, interstate truck driver; Level Propane, delivering propane; Espanola Public Schools, bus driver, and eventually retired from the City of Santa Fe Transit System as a Transit Operator and Union Steward. Upon returning to NM he met his wife Lorena whom he married on July 1, 2000 and had 20 blessed years of marriage. Richard returned to NM for his love of culture and his need to get back to his Garcia and Serrano family roots. Richard was also a member of the Knights of Columbus “San Juan de los Caballeros” Council 13684. He had a heart of gold and will truly be missed by his family. A rosary will be recited on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at San Juan de Bautista Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh with a burial to follow at the Chamita Cemetery. There will be an online broadcast available for family and friends out of state or for those that are not able to attend due to COVID-19. All services will be broadcasted via Zoom and links are found below for friends and family that are not available to attend. Serving as pallbearer will be, Antonio Garcia. Honorary pallbearers will be, Jose Garcia, Oliver Day, Willie Atencio, Estevan Vigil, Preciliano Montoya, Angie Dominguez, Kathy Tafoya, Miguel Vigil and Orlando Garcia. The family would like to send their sincere thanks to Dr. Fei Gu and staff at the Santa Fe Cancer Center for the wonderful care and compassion they provided to Richard and his family. A heartfelt thank you to Father Nathan Lopez and Father Jose Herrera, San Juan de Baptista, for their blessings and prayers, Amber Care Hospice for their quick tender care, DeVargas Funeral Home staff, and to all the family and friends for their calls, visits, prayers and food. The Garcia family will always treasure everyone’s kindness and support.
