JOSE INOCENCIO MARTINEZ, 93, a lifelong resident of Peñasco, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 10, 2015 following a lengthy illness. He was born December 18, 1921 in Llano Largo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Federico and Matilde Martinez; sisters, Josie Mitchell, Onofre Martinez and Rosella Garcia; half-brother, Victoriano Martinez and great-grandson, Lorenzito Najar. As a young lad, Jose worked at CC Camp in Glorieta for 2 years. In June 1942 he was drafted into the US Army where he served as a Military Police stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was honorably discharged from the Army on November 1, 1945. Upon his return home he worked in the mines in Colorado, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico until he began his Federal Service career with the Forest Service until his retirement in 1987. After his retirement, he enjoyed working on his property in Peñasco, traveling the world with his wife Edumenia, of 63 years. Jose enjoyed walking, loved the outdoors, spending time with his family and woodcarving. Being a positive role model to his wonderful family is a true legacy for Jose and he can still be heard whistling as he loved to do. Mr. Martinez is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Edumenia F. Martinez; children, Raffie T. Martinez (Eric), Amanda Martinez (Gilbert), Enos Martinez (Darlene), Elmer Martinez (Easther); grandchildren, Joey Chavez, Renee Bradley, Jolene Najar, Leroy Fresquez, Jr., Edwin George, Andrea Portillos, Vincent Martinez, Christopher Martinez and Matthew Martinez; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Domingo Martinez (Sunday); sisters, Evila Romero and Eneda Martinez; sisters-in-law, Carmen Martinez and Mary Cruz; brother-in-law, Anselmo Fresquez (Maclovia); special friend, Roberto Gabbert and many nieces, nephews and many friends. Public visitation will begin on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at the San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Peñasco with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. also at the San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Peñasco. Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Eric Martinez, Joey Chavez, Vincent Martinez, Edwin George, Christopher Martinez and Leroy Fresquez, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be, Gilbert Baca, Toby Bradley, Lorenzo Najar, Adam Portillos, Domingo Martinez and Robert Gabbert. The family of Jose Martinez has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
