John David (J.D.) Smith, 73, a resident of Arroyo Seco passed away suddenly in his bed on Saturday, December 10, 2011. J.D. was born on December 31, 1938 in Salina, Kansas but grew up in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from South High in Denver in 1957 and in 1961 he joined the Air Force and served his country until 1964. He was a Mechanical Designer for Los Alamos National Laboratory and worked on many projects. J.D. loved classical music and working in his metal workshop. He was also a man with a gentle spirit especially to stray or hurt animals. The lives of numerous dogs and cats were touched by his generosity and kindness. He was preceded in death by his brother, Steven Paul Smith; parents, John Paul Smith and Faith Sherman Huff Smith. J.D. is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy May Smith; sister, Deb Wall; daughter, Charity Smith-Engelin and husband Sean; several cousins and his many beloved pets. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel at DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in his memory to the “Angel Fund” established at the Arroyo Seco Animal Hospital.
